Young School
“A child centered learning community”
Dr. Peter E. Harrison, Principal
We welcome you to our Young School family with a great deal of enthusiasm and optimism. We believe that your child will be successful in achieving academic and social expectations if we work effectively together. You are invited to discuss volunteering opportunities with your child’s teacher, participate actively in the Young School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), and join us for special celebrations throughout the school year. We invite you to communicate with us as you desire more information or have insights that will expand our understanding of your child. You are encouraged to read with your child every day. Enjoy walks on the beach, in the woods, or through the neighborhood. Engage your child in conversations with you. Listen carefully to what your child is saying, because those words may indicate the support that your child needs from you. Anticipate that the transition from home to school, especially at the beginning of the school year, may generate some anxiety for you and your child. A little extra hug, keeping a stiff upper lip when you feel ready to seriously cry your eyes out, positive words of encouragement, and “I can’t wait to hear all about your day at supper time” often provides the child with enough security to get through the first couple of days of school and then sail through to the end of the year with great success! We look forward to celebrating this educational journey with you often.
Young School staff are committed to bringing our Shared Statement of Commitment to life for each of the students that we serve. To this end, we are in the process of designing school based experiences that provide students with opportunities to learn and practice our school values. Our first four school-wide Morning Meetings will highlite our values. Please enjoy reading our Young School Shared Statement of Commitment, as follows:
Young School
Shared Statement of Commitment
Young School is committed to building a collaborative learning community of students, parents, and school staff.
Our school community respects the differences among learners and responds to their individual needs. We provide a safe and nurturing environment that promotes intellectual, social, emotional, and physical achievement.
We encourage the development of our core values, including honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, citizenship, and fairness; and we celebrate our success in this endeavor.
